After having spent time at home with their parents, some children are reluctant to start pre-school. They may fuss and be upset when you take them to school and some may complain that they don’t feel well. This is normal in the early days, and will usually dissipate as the child becomes more accustomed to school. However, there are ways to make school a little easier for your child.
Give Them Choices
Take the stress away from the actual school day and focus on things your child can choose for themselves. This may include what they would like for breakfast or which outfit they should wear. If your little one is too indecisive, you may offer just two options, such as a red jacket or a white one. They then select the one they want to use.
Allowing children to make their own choices gives them a sense of power and control over the situation. They will be more self-confident and will tend to carry this confidence into their school day.
Add a Token of Affection
A fun way to make separation a little easier is to read The Kissing Hand and give your child a kiss on their hand each morning when they leave for school. Alternatively, you may add something to their backpack so they can remember you all day long. This may be a small clay heart, a photo of the family, or something else that reminds your little one of your love and encourages them.
Ask About Their Day
Of course, you should ask about your child’s day when they get out of school, but don’t forget beforehand, too. On the way to pre-school, you may ask who they’re most excited to see this morning. Query them on what they think they may learn today, what the lunch will be, or which toy they plan to play with. This can help your little one look forward to their day with excitement, instead of worry.
Choose the Right Pre-school
It’s essential that your child attend a pre-school you are happy with. They should feel safe and cared for and enjoy the majority of their time in school. While every child has down days, pre-school should be a place of interesting lessons and new skills. It’s an adventure so select the school with care.
